Random Tidbits: Throwing Potions

Post by Nefarius » Mon May 24, 2010 5:21 pm

Throwing potions, ah another such thing that in vanilla essentially become useless past mid normal difficulty, with the exception of some challenge builds (and certain people using them to crash the game for other "purposes"), there are several reasons why they haven't really been used much, the main one of course being a low, fixed, damage that amounted for nothing on hell difficulty (especially when we consider the abundance of fire and poison resistance and immunity compared to other resistances, that and the fact the poison ones dealt near no damage at all), the other of course being that you have more interesting things at hand (usually) then a bunch of poison clouds and a non spectacular fire AoE.

We've tackled this problem from two different angles first of all, the regular potions that just splashed some damage now deal damage depending on the ilvl of the potion, this means potions found later in the game deal more damage then those found early on, despite being the same item. The level is based on a formula where:

slvl = min( max( 1, ( ( ( ilvl - qlvl ) * factor ) / ( ilvl + 256 ) ) ), max )

Factor and max are defined on a per item basis.

The other aspect of course addresses the fact most of them are rather boring, by adding some with special effects (though nothing too extravagant yet).

Notice specially the two pictures of rancid gas potions at different ilvls.

One extra for this thread, here is one of the special potions in action:

Wow, this is amazing stuff Nef.
And that's true, I really think almost nobody uses throwing potions even in mods.
I've only used them like 3 times in all my time playing d2, and no further than Blood Moor.

This is a really nice way to sparkle the interest in these non-conventional weapons.
Thanks for the screens :)
