You could just swap your translated tbls with the english ones in the mpqs.

That might work on an ad hoc basis. In your external tree, just put .tbl files in data\local\LNG\ENG instead of data\local\LNG\CHI and leave the USE file out of it. Launch the game with the -direct switch (but definitely not the -txt switch), or use the launching script which does the same thing, and external files will be used if located in the right places.

The problem with this approach is, the game may assume Latin fonts for English strings. If font choice is hardcoded into language-specific locations, then a font problem might force a default into the English .tbls and Latin fonts. I have only Latin fonts, so I can't see what horan's files should look like. If we are able to piece out the missing files, and I get copies of same, I might be able to duplicate his results or figure out how to fix the bug.

I suspect there is some hardcoded lookup table that just doesn't recognize the custom .tbl file at all.

That tells me it is a font issue, as I suspected. If you know how to examine mpq contents, you might see what you have in data\global\ui\font or data\local\font. Our datafiles don't show anything for ...\font\chi but you should be able to extract the listfiles from your versions of d2data.mpq, d2exp.mpq and patch_D2.mpq (use WinMPQ and our datafile to see the (listfile) for each mpq) and see if any ...\font\chi files are listed there. If so, those are the ones I referred to on September 29.

1. no such "data\global\ui\font" folder in my d2data.mpq
2. there is "data\local\font\latin", but no "\font\chi"
3. the only things i can find are bunch of files located in "data\local\ui\chi\"
4. chinese font file should large than 10m i supposed.

plus, i still cant use short cut to launch the game yet. 8-O
every time i tried, it will give me an warning as below:

Code: Select all

This application has encountered a critical error:

The file data is corrupt.

Program: ***\game.exe
File: patch_d2.mpq

Press OK to terminate the application

I've run out of ideas on where Chinese fonts might exist. So I can't test it here...sorry you put so much effort into the translation, but unless somebody familiar with Oriental versionns of the game can point us in the right direction we don't have options.

Make sure it's the original game.exe you use to run it with. So, it's not anykind of loader you try to run.

thanks for your advice, Myhrginoc and kingpin.
i will try to find someone is familar with chinese version.
wish me luck. :o

update:
i'v post my problem on a chinese diablo mod forum, and people there had given me some useful(maybe) advice.

they suggested that maybe its the language setting of plugy. but as u fix most of the parameters, i cant change it. can u give me a help here?

another suggestion they provide is try to merge the tfw-patch.mpq into patch_d2.mpq, then begin the game use -direct switch. i gave it a try, and i can see the character selecting window has been translated! but when i got inside the game, still a mess in there...

(if i begin the game with vbs after i merged 2 mpq into 1, it would still in english. so maybe there is really something to do with plugy?)

i seem to see a ray of light in the total darkness...
impatiently waiting for ur reply![/b]

 Good call! I do have an English setting in plugY. I'll open that up in the next release. When I first configured the plugin, it never occurred to me somebody might want to translate the mod. After setting it, I promptly forgot I did so!

You mean the player titles for completed difficulties? Those are hardcoded and always have been. I believe somebody made a plugin for softcoding them but I haven't used it.
