pulling stuff out of the beta

Post by cla$$ics » Thu Jul 09, 2015 4:01 am

So I did a bunch of digging in the old D2 beta and as it turns out, there's quite a bit of difference. For starters, a completely different Flying Scimitar token and also a bunch of new sounds.
But I also found a few interesting tidbits worth sharing:
- Invisibility was a planned item property, along with "neutral invisibility" (?)
- There was also a planned item property that prevented potion use altogether. Let's be thankful that one didn't make it in. :D
- Found a warriv.dc6 that looks just like fara.dc6 :mrgreen:
- There's already expansion content in the game at this point
- There's evidence that the D1 gold-as-objects system was in place at one point.
- There's evidence that you could hire more than one mercenary
- The talk/trade npc menu was once images, which a) proved even further that Blizzard doesn't know how to spell "Identify" (it's not Indentify btw), but that there was also an option titled "Pray". I'm speculating that this was for Paladins?

Here is some differences in superunique names:
Lord of the Damned -> Lord De Seis
Sarina the Battlemaid -> Battlemaid Sarina
Web Mage the Burning -> Szark the Burning
Bonebreak -> Bonebreaker
Boneash -> Bone Ash
Leatherarm -> The Feature Creep
Navi -> Geldel -> Flavie
The organization of the TBL is vastly different as well, and it reveals a large number of enemies that didn't make the cut:
- Demon Skeleton
- Wendigo (Brute ingame)
- Wolf
- Hell Spark
- Blood Spark
- Fire Spark
- Swamp Wisp
- Albino Roach
- Fire Burst
- Eater of Worlds
- Eater of Worlds Larva
- Eater of Worlds Egg
- Eater of Worlds Young
- Sand Maggot Larva
- Jungle Urchin
- Ice Rat
- Rock Clan
- Ice Clan
- Black Vulture
- Drowned (became Drowned Carcass)
- Frozen Dead
- Wood Clan
- Ancient Remains
- Dusty Carcass
- Magog
- Goliath
- Corpse Bow
- Invisible
- Eidolon
- Shade
- Fetch
- Banshee
- Broken
- Amphibian
- Nirom Malus
As well as a few objects:
- Canopic Jar
- Bag
- Vase
- Cabinet
- Obelisk
- Cocoon
- Blister
- Holyshrine
- Soulstone Forge
- Hell Bridge
- Eunuch
There are also some very very subtle differences in the character animations. I couldn't find any flame sword animations though.That MPQ is cut very heavily to conserve on space.
Although done for our needs, mod-makers should like these changes, too.

I can't at present, but fara.dc6 is present in d2data.mpq. warriv.dc6 is the same type of thing. Basically, they're RPG portraits like what you'd see in Fallout.

There's evidence that the D1 gold-as-objects system was in place at one point.
But gold is already a unit :P Also pre-alpha D2 used the Diablo 1 engine.
There's already expansion content in the game at this point
Just because we know it as expansion content, doesn't mean it was at this point.

In alpha they even at some point used a 3d engine.

There are a few Levels.txt lines under "Expansion" in the beta, including five siege levels and a town. Also, Assassin and Druid strings are present - Bill Roper said in an interview dated 1999 that there will be five classes in the game, this beta was out in 2000. I think you said you have two different betas? I have one dated May 2000. There's also a Public Stress Test which I couldn't get to install correctly (it just launched D2)

I forgot to mention something also: the inventory gfx on the Bone Helm looks really different, more of a D1 style, but sporting a different design too. The character graphics are the same though as the released game. In some alpha video you can see the old design. It looked more like a goat skull than a demon skull. I think maybe the helmet design got moved to Corrupt Rogues but I need to compare the footage more closely.

Also forgot to mention, and talk of expansion reminded me. There are runes present in Misc.txt but they all have different names (Eld rune was kept). Noteworthy also is that they had three different grades: Lesser, Regular and Greater for each type.

I should maybe check Cubemain.txt or other files for differences now that I think about it.
