Nightmare level crashing

Post by jc2 » Tue Sep 30, 2003 7:21 am

Had no problem when doing Normal level but when Amazon first ventured out of camp in Nightmare lockup occurred with a few minutes. Sometimes during combat sometimes when just looking at an item.
Thought maybe the Amazon had some item causing so switched to a Paladin and the same problem occurred.
The error message was always the same
Location: D2 Common\DATABLS\Sequence.
Cap, Line #2863
Expression : nIndex!=0

Any idea what might be causing this?

No clue.

If it was happening with just the one character and in the same area of the game, I'd think it was a monster spawn or a unique monster spawn doing it. But you say it happens sometimes when just looking at an item, so that doesn't sound right. And you're getting the problem with two different games and two different characters.

So far, I haven't heard of any other Nightmare crash problems, so I'm not sure what's cursing you.

If there's anything consistent about each of the circumstances (the same monster nearby or something like that), let me know. Might help me track down the problem...if there is a problem that can be fixed.

Anyone else having similar problems in higher difficulties like Nightmare?

Jeff, there doesn't to be any specific thing that causes the problem.
Perhaps there is a corrupt file on my machine but I would have thought a crash would have happened much sooner than it did.
About all I could do is zip the save game for the Paladin and send it to you to look at. Maybe there is some item I have that caused the trouble or if you don't get a crash then I would know it's just a prob on my end.
Sorry I didn't save the Amazon game.
The file size is 192kb zipped.

Were your characters SIC characters or were they "original" d2 ones?
Which is your version of SIC? of D2?
I don't know if it's possible, but maybe your sic version is simply corrupted.
oh, and what was wrote in your d2 log file?(i think it's called D2dayofplay.txt, but not sure)it often contains more useful debugging info than the windows error box
I'm just a french fan..

I'm using SIC 2.21a--got the full download as opposed to patching.
D2 with 1.09patch.

The characters were both brand new.

The log you mentioned doesn't exist under than name but there is a log of the most recent activity which I will paste here if it does anyone any good.
since it is quite lengthy please feel free to delete this particular post if you wish

Since there hasn't been any other reports like this I am assuming something got zapped somewhere in D2 so decided to do a complete reinstall of D2 then apply patches, revert to 109.b and put in SIC 2.21a.
Hopefully that will fix it. Anyway really waiting for the next mod so not a biggie.
If and when I find any problems will let you know.

Solved the reason for the crashes.
Was something to do with carrying over a Merc from Normal to Nightmare.
Had been using the Merc from Kurast. When I dump him and hire a new Merc iwhen I start Nightmare level then so far no problems at all.
Why this happens no idea, but doesn't seem to be worth figuring out to fix it.

What kind of merc, exactly?

This problem occurred in an earlier version of SiC and it had to do with messing up their skills. Maybe I missed one that needs fixing. If you could help me narow down the search, that would be great. (which act the merc was hired in and what element/aura/whatever it specialized in).

He was hired in Act III and specialized in Crystal Magic.
I normally keep this type of Merc when available since I don't find the Barb type very useful.
Since dumping him with my latest Amazon character there hasn't been any problems.

The problem is definately with the merc skills. When a Crystal Magic merc reaches level 37, the next time he casts a spell the game will crash. I am not sure if this is influenced by +skills items. My merc had +2 to skills at the time. The crashing was absolutely consistent.

Obviously, I failed to return some skill or another back to the "original" D2 settings.

I'll be rebuilding 2.21B later this week, probably. If I wasn't too lazy to re-do the game load screen again, I'd just call it 2.21C. Instead, I'll call it a rebuild. ;)

I'll fix that merc problem (I hope), the monster that crashes that one Act 5 area, and the problem with the barbarian starting weapon. Might fix one or two other small things...but those three for sure.

Any chance this 'C' build is gonna be available soon? I been getting this crash (ast least it sounds like the same one) like a mofo on my imported Pally, and am reluctant to give up my merc..

Afraid not. SiC for 1.09 is pretty much over.

As it is, I haven't had the time to really get into SiC for patch 1.10 because of house-hunting woes, but that's where my energies will be going.

Sorry :(

If by some miracle I end up with time to try to address these issues, I will...but I think it's pretty unlikely.
