Alpha Skills
Going thru archive after archive, I compiled this list.
Each one is split into two sections: The top one is of in-development skills (aka skills that were there and vanished again during dev) and another from the pre-release (aka last step before beta).
Kick - every char had this, kick knocked monsters back, thats about it.
--- Amazon skills ---
Safe Shot - amazon skill that prevented hitting allies with arrows (so apparently friendly fire was indeed present in D2 early on), too bad
Vital Shot - as far as I can interpret from the old old pre release shizzin this was a kind of 1-hit-wonder thing, but probably took very long to use (like Impale is today).
True Aim - another one of those high-accuracy bow skills, said to be slower then normal shots.
Hurl - the throwing version of impale. The missile bursts as a result (the unused breaking missile was probably also used for this!)
Entangle - hitting a monster with a spear/jav making it imobile.
Fend - as a side note, it had knockback in the pre-beta time
Healing - like D1 heal.
Repair - zons and barbs had this skill.

Eye of Zeus = Inner Sight
Hand of Athena = Slow Missiles (actually it made missiles drop when casted, like that matrix effect, according to that E3 report)
Fist of Ares - this buff duplicated all the amazons missiles!!
--- Barb Skills ---
Various: Hit Multiple Targets, Enhanced Damage etc.
Retreat Attack - attack and then move out of attackers melee range.
Charge - on the barb before.
Animal Totems - don't know if this came from Blizzard or if its a fansite phantasm.

Find Heart - hork the corpse for organs.
Track Monster - instant MH, showed targeted monsters on the map...
Track Player - showed targeted player on the map...
--- Necromancer skills ---

Mind Control = click and convert a target to fight at your side.
Reverse Vampire = old lifetap
Taint = no desc, probably damaged the monster over time, judging from the skill desc.
Poison Inferno = like inferno, just poison, replaced with Poison Explosion.
Spike Field = a damaging AoE skill, anyway, this was replaced with the Bone Prison Rush-O-Rama.
Familiar = creates a scout and shifts control to it for a few secs, monsters dont see the soout.
Homunculus = not blood golem.
Reanimate = raise skeleton
Summon Dead = bacame skeletal mage!
--- Paladin skills ---
Shepherd - absorbs damage dealt to the pally.
Congregration - Concentration?
Absorption - absorbs damage, like Shepherd.
Inspiration - a mix of Absorbing and Returning damage.
Reflection - early form of thorns.
Holy Aura - early form of sanctuary.
Ward - a shield related skill.
Multiple Hits - a zeal clone.
Flaming Sword - fire enchanted melee attack --- thats why only the Pally has that sword-graphic It was never an item, it was a pally skill, just like Holy Shield!
Retribution - a melee skill of unknown nature.
Chastise - another shield skill, no desc.
Shield Bash - smite clone.
True Blade - ignores targets defense, based on the desc.
Arm of God - early form of Sacrifice, this actually made the attack at zeal speed if the desc is accurate.
Zealotry - boots str and life but reduces speed.
Pray - healing spell effecting only yourself.
Bestow - unknown, but to be cast on allies.
Cleanse - cleasning before it became an aura.
Cleanse Other - this is the same, to cast on others.
Block - a passive skill adding extra % to block.
Redeem - removes curses.
Retreat - a braindead passive, it supposedly made your char 'jump back' when attacked, but probably like DEA.
Purify - removes poison.
Resurrect - revive a fallen player

Purification = like cleansing, but coexisted on the same tree at the same time.
Holy Wind = holy freeze, just not cold based.

Meteor Shower - aka firestorm (as it was called later on), a fire based Blizzard.
Immolation - like the hellfire spell.
Cold Curse / Chill Blood - made the monster unable to recover life.
Sleet - a weaker version of Ice Storm.
Ice Storm - like Blizzard.
Frost - creates a freezing cloud.
Dancing Sword - summoned a sword minion.
Darkness - a dark cloud damaging all but undead.

The movement for the Zon atleast was Dodge (later split into the three we have now).The passive and magic tree was the 'Healing, Movement and Repair' tree... makes one wonder what the 'movement' part was.

Nefarius, you might want to take a few screenies to show the icons or the effect of some of the skills from this ancient thread. I have many more screenshots, PM me if you need anything else For example, screenshots of some early Paladin aura overlays and such.

Info from some other source.
Spike Field - worked just like the spike attack of the death maulers, just within an AoE rather then a single subtile.
Frost - freezes the enemy (not chill), doesn't do damage.
Numbness - Chills enemies, lowers AR(?)
Shivers - a AoE skill, slows enemies, reduces damage and AR/
Shock Trap - not a Nova replacement, coexisted alongside Nova during E3 pre-release, it's said to be like a landmine. Hence trap. The icon is today used for Lightning Mastery.
Cleansing - Boosts poison resistance.
Meditation - full refill of the life orb
Purification - removes poison.
Prayer - gives extra life regen after casting.
Concentration - increases mana
Holy Wind - like hurricane! It actually damaged them with phys damage according to that one report.
Redemption - removes curse effects.
Sanctuary - creates a barrier deflecting missile attacks and damaging enemies that come near.
The desc there for Hand of God seams to be from a too early build.

It did coexist alongside Nova, but was pretty much the same thing. Didn't static field also work in similar fasion? I remember seeing some sort of projectile related to static field in an old screen.

would it be at all possible to bring any of those back? because i actually am working on a mod and i want to make healing skills and ressurection skills. but im not very proficient in creating skills. so far ive had no luck in creating a heal spell. i also have another question. say once u hit 99, u could sub class, aka start back to level 1 of another class, keeping ur old appearance and skills (just the ones you put points into. but u would now be another class with those skills available is that possible? also is it possible once u hit 99 to create another class for your character like say MASTER class. where u could obtain new skills for level 99 only, and say u had already chosen a subclass you could only learn some master class spells as the more powerful ones would be for a pure class character. does that make sense? because ive really been interested in making a mod like that.

it would need new code, but the level 99 skills could be done with some trickry. most of those alpha skill can be added but some would need new funcs which is ce once again

where can i obtain the txt files for these skills? the ones i have dont have those, are they earlier patches of txt files?

you won't find them anywhere(i doubt they are even in classic v1) you you need to make there skills yourself using skills.txt, skilldesc.txt, missiles.txt and itemstatcost.txt

If you wanted to allow someone to gain levels in another class, and you wanted to do it without code, you could make new skills for every class, that were copies of other class skills. but, each skill had a level requirement of 99, and you use the skill tab plugin thingy to add new tabs with a selection of skills from other classes. Like you wouldnt make all of the sorcerer skills available to the barbarian, but maybe enchant, frost armor, teleport etc. maybe Warmth for the necromancer.

there ase alot of those funny txt files in the mpqs (theres one that contains npc dialogue etc). there are also a couple of other exp strings in string.tbl. it always amazes me how its always the best ideas that are the ones that get left out

I think that the (three?) articles that I bumped were past the third page and held some really good/interesting topics, especially with the thread we have open now "Balancing skills".
Example, I've been playing Diablo 2 for a while, not until '07/'08 did I actually put any time into it. These alpha skills intrigued me, especially now that I'm making my own mod.

Enough. The threads are here and if they're interesting for you, then read them - nothing stops you from doing so. If you have something really important to say on the topic, you might resurrect an old thread like this. But bumping 3 years old threads with completely useless posts that don't contain anything of value is considered spamming.
