new clue scrolls

Another Idea I got, it's already in work :D

I started by softcoding the NPC speech box, on a right-click scroll. This was a simple softcoding test but I finally decided to use it.
It's simple, you right-click on the scroll, and a speech box appears like when you talk to NPC.

Here is the idea ...

First, the scrolls can be found in the game by killing monsters, cube recipes, boss kills, vendors and even mystery box recipe.
More details on the mystery box: viewtopic.php?f=35&t=57613
The scrolls usually contains 2-3 pages, revealing some information not available on the documentation, making them very useful.
Some scrolls are more rare than others, but reveal some better information. Each scrolls are marked by a clan, order or a precise character.
At the moment, I have 3 signatures available on scrolls, but there will be more.
Known clans and characters scrolls are: Horadrim Clan, sisterhood of the Sightless eye, Mephisto. (there will be more!)

Here is a video of a final product:
The scroll on the video is an Horadrim scroll, and all characters start the game with this scroll. You can see the Horadrim signature on last page.
It doesn't looks so good in video because of quality not at 100%, but in-game I think it looks really great.
This scroll is pretty useless since it just explains what these scrolls are used, it explains the concept :P
As you can see on the video, the the page scrolls every 12-13 seconds, but the duration can be controlled.
I made it long enough so players actually have time to read them :P

But the scroll in the video is kinda a demo, I plan to recreate the scrolling text effect just lie real NPC speeches, it will be great.

example of scrolls found, not really a spoiler since these are easy ones:
- Akara sells a sightless eye scroll at very high cost, maximum price.
- You get an Horadrim scroll on game start.
- Mephisto drops a scroll on death, in Hard difficulty only. (Hard = Hell difficulty)

So, what you guys think of the idea? :D
I don't know if I will make a tutorial for these scrolls, so don't ask me.

whist

hmmm, let me guess...

did you use a state that generated an overlay(.dcc) ?

if yes, then you'll have to use a lot of states for different scrolls
*states are kinda limited right...

:P kinda cool though

good luck

well, I don't need lot of states so i might have enough for the scrolls.
there will be about 10-12 scrolls, maybe a little more.

edit: the scroll on the video was kinda a demo, I plan to recreate the scrolling text effect just like NPC speeches :D

i 100% agree with this one, as this adds a whole lot flavor to your clue methods :P

the .dcc's will be used along with their maximum potential too

an audio speech that syncronizes with this state would be awesome but not that necessary :P

good luck on your modding bro

You don't need states. You can do this using missiles, too.

you mean line 47 of skills.txt?

we are not talking about how to display this stuff, we are talking about kidpaddle's method here...

*i bet you can display this kind of stuff using flippies

he means using pspell 10/11 with a modded fireball that releases a static non-colliding missile. This has its own drawbacks though, like the missile not moving with you...

he is probably talking about the skill scroll tutorial I posted yes.
but remember that this softcoded way will only allow me to do one variety of scroll.
the easiest way is this trick I found with states granted by scrolls. Also the offsets settings in overlay.txt + AnimRate makes it very easy to customize.

yeah, been doing this ever since i started modding :P

you can re position overlays and stuff like that without even changing the .dcc offset itself, which is kinda time saving for us mod-makers
kidpaddle94" wrote:remember that this softcoded way will only allow me to do one variety of scroll.
that's what i am talking about

so it would be impossible to create multiple clue-scrolls using missiles, without code editing or something

*i believe pspell 10/11 actually calls line 47 of skills.txt, :P

Oh, I must've missed that detail. The concept of using up a state just troubles me immensely :(
The non-expandable 255 limit is really troublesome, y'know?

I just don't know why this limit has been set :(
and this is troubles for us, mod makers >.<

the best would be a limit of 32k - 64k like most of other txt files ^^

its not a line limit, its due to the sync packet only having 8 bits for the state id*, also, states 0 & 255 are reserved, so in reality, its only 254 states you have access to, thankfully I got rid of that retarded limit :P

*technically, you can have more than 254 states on the server, so if its only for server side stuff, you could probably push it past 255...

Necro bumping this because I'd like to ask whist how he did this. I was planning to make a clue scroll and this seemed like the easiest way
Anybody has a "clue"? :D

It's an overlay, granted via a temporary state right-click item. That's a pretty poor way to achieve this but it works and it's pretty much the only workaround. With some work you could make up the animation with scrolling text like it's a real scrolling speech (NPCs speeches-like)

Hello there !

Your work is completely amazing kidpaddle94, me and my very tiny modding knowledge are very impressed with all you can do at modding this game ! 8-O
And not only on this topic in particular

Is there any chance to see a tuto released for this kinf of scroll ?

(I try to work with misc item and 'spelldescstr' to display the most importants cube formula, but the text is completely screwed up ingame, with clone and reiteration of the texte...
So this system to display text seems to be the best thing I can do :) )

Sorry 'bout my english and digging that topic ;)

Cheers !

[Edit]
I finaly manage to acheave my formula reminder, with dummy stats...
Alone in the cube for the next page, with any rejuv potion for the precedent one. Work pretty well :o

But will be great though that a tuto come to live for school purpose

Bye !
