Some spells are also continual light source (think light ball hovering on you, faeries summon ...)

Wow. Nice. Looks like he's holding his torch, and a shield. Joel, you should add in those watches with the light up clock face. Then you can carry your shield, AND your weapon.

I think he meant you should make a watch instead of a torch as your light source, yaknow one of those ones with the indiglo or whatever... I think he meant it as a joke.

Oh, and would you encounter enemies in this area? being caught with a torch out would really suck.

Well the torch is only one mean to have a light source.
There is lantern that work like charm (ie in the inventory) or some magical weapons/armor that produces light.

And for being caught with a torch, just use Weapon Switch :D

I'll however increase the base light radius & the LR bonus of light source :

Also think that a few monster have light radius hehe ...
I hope that will lead to more tatcical approach. This combined to the hefty mana cost of most spell will lead to be sure to hit before casting anything.

Make sure there is a way to regain mana though, preferably by killing enemies. That way you'd have the tactical aspect of aiming, without the annoyance of running to town every 5 minures to heal up and buy another 50 supermana pots.

Yep exactly .... mana regen rate is a bit higher than regular LoD and some skills have give mana on kill built in ...

now I just need a way to have skills that drain life :/

If it's a missile skill, add a Quickness finishing function that gives state 'life_drain' or somesuch with hpregen -400 for 5 frames... that's how my Bone Spirit and Blood Flash/Star life drain works. :)

Well sorry for the lack of updates lately :(
I'm caught in some administrative stuff IRL but I still work :p
