MPQ Viewer does not open files

Post by clueso » Sun Oct 28, 2018 5:55 pm

I am new to mod making and I followed the instructions in the Idiot's Guild.
I am currently in the tutorial, Exercise #1, but I already run into problems.

When I run MPQ View (I downloaded it from Phrozen Keep) and I click on "File ---> Open Data File" and select Patch_D2.mpq, either nothing happens, or I get an error message that say Can not open file 'path to my D2 mod folder \ Patch_D2.mpq'.
I also tried it via 'Open Archive', but same problem: the contents of the MPQ do not load/appear in the main window of the MPQ viewer. It just stays empty.

As said in the guide, I made a copy of Patch_D2.mpq and put it in another folder (my mod folder) and that is the file I am trying to open.

The patch I currently use is 1.13d. Maybe that is the problem, I don't know.

And yes, I run the MPQ Viewer as an administrator.

Does someone know what the problem is?

Thank you.

Hello,

You need to use the File -> Open data file first and select your data file. If you don't have one, you can download it from here (at the bottom).

Next, use the File -> Open archive and select the MPQ you want to open, it should now work :)

Ah, okay, that worked.

Thanks Xaphan!

I thought when they were talking about 'data file' in the guide they simply meant to open the file that you want to edit, like D2_Patch.mpq.
