median_192.168 :rate this skill system [feedback]

Post by Brother Laz » Tue Nov 11, 2003 11:14 pm

New mod :)
It won't go fast, but sooner or later it will be done. :)

The idea is that each character has 24 castable skills, divided in four skill 'trees' [schools] of 6 skills each, linked linearly like the Druid's elemental tree. Each character has two class-specific schools; the other two are shared with one other character each. This setup combines class-specific skills with some shared skills, in such a way that I won't have to make 1,926,884 different skills [time issues, remember], while still having some racial identity.

Characters

Amazon: Solar, Lunar, Holy, Passionate
Assassin: Fallen, Evil, Unholy, Vengeful
Barbarian: Primal, Elemental, Totemic, Passionate
Druid: Natural, Feral, Fire, Totemic
Necromancer: Carnal, Spiritual, Unholy, Ice
Paladin: Divine, Good, Holy, Vengeful
Sorceress: Metamagic, Lightning, Fire, Ice

Schools

Carnal [necromancer]: direct damage attack spells and Skarran worship.
Divine [paladin]: defensive melee attacks and Zakarumite worship.
Elemental [barbarian]: ya know their armor is packed with C4?
Evil [assassin]: traps, land-mines, plastique and Jack-In-The-Bombs.
Fallen [assassin]: fast and disabling melee attacks with fighting staves.
Feral [druid]: shapeshift and use a variety of melee attacks.
Fire [druid, sorceress]: elemental fire and angry fire creatures.
Good [paladin]: heal yourself and help your allies level faster than you.
Holy [amazon, paladin]: become immune and let them kill your allies first.
Ice [necromancer, sorceress]: elemental ice and angry ice creatures.
Lightning [sorceress]: elemental lightning and power shields.
Lunar [amazon]: bow and crossbow attacks and Selunite worship.
Metamagic [sorceress]: RPBs, silencers and laser sights for your spells.
Natural [druid]: be nice to nature, hug a tree and he'll hug you back.
Passionate [amazon, barbarian]: when you're burning to avenge someone.
Primal [barbarian]: melee attacks as seen in Los Angeles.
Solar [amazon]: ranged javelin attacks and Suramite worship.
Spiritual [necromancer]: when you need salvation from your inner voices.
Totemic [druid, barbarian]: cathedrals of the noble savages.
Unholy [necromancer, assassin]: call spirits from ye vasty deep.
Vengeful [assassin, paladin]: if you are weak, make them weaker.

Actually, I don't think you need feedback for individual skills. I liked all of the skills you made in former versions of your mods and I'm sure you will greatly succeed in doing new ones for this new project since you are very talented in inventing them.

EDIT: The only aspect, I can't really follow is, why solar is mainly javelin-oriented, same with lunar and arrows. I mean, most probably the skill will rock, but I don't see the scheme behind it.

As a general feedback, I like the new concept, too. I don't know how well this will really work in the game (e.g. a damage enchantment for a melee weapon has different effects for a sorc or a barb) but it definitively is worth trying out.

And please, please, please try to finish it
All of your former mods were so promising! But that made it even more disappointing when you abandonded them.

Because they're the amazon class-specific branches. :)

Whoever said a sorc gets a damage enchantment? She has the Metamagic, Lightning, Ice and Fire trees.

And for your god's sake, if there's a problem with it so far, tell me NOW and not AFTER I finish the mod [which screwed up MEDIAN]

The skills themselves are nicely tied. can you elaborate on the prereq. order, you said linear but I really don't see it clearly.

Stuff to consider :

-> +x to (school) skills properties ??
-> do we allow cross school skill bonus on item; Like a paladin unique items with + some Fallen or Elemental skills ?

They're currently ordered alphabetically. :)

Nope, no way to give a bonus to part of a skill tab.

Sure, but only the more useless skills. :) [level 4 Ring of Fire on a barbarian helm? :) ]

I like the sound of that too.

My two cents:

Fallen
Aldebaran: throw multiple throwing knives at all nearby enemies. (Sweet! I had to look up the name though, the Bulls Eye eh?.)
Dark Embrace: rapid melee attack that stuns your target. (Good, since you probably won’t have my beloved burst of speed)
Fallen Dance: multiple melee attacks at a very fast speed. (Err, we need this /and/ Dark Embrace?)
Pandemonium: throw a lot of throwing knives in random directions. (/Huh/. Useful in dire straights I suppose.)
Storm Crows: throw a spread of knives that home in on their targets. (Sweet!)

Suggested Skill(s):

Soul Shard: Hurl a knife of mystical energy wrenched from your very soul. Damage to self, magic damage to target that gets bonuses from Str/Dex?

Question: Wasn’t there going to be staff-related skills in here? I like the idea of a staff-wielding assassin.

Sinister
Chrysalis: mine that detonates when touched and freezes an area. (Sweet, always thought they needed an icy trap)
Maelstrom: mine that creates a vortex when touched, which stuns enemies. (Useful for get-aways or large groups!)
Rising Sin: mine that explodes when touched and sets the ground on fire. (Intriguing, could be useful for boss-battles or hordes if you use the ice trap or a ice mage hireling.)

Suggested Skill(s):

Scorpion Caltrops: Scatter an area with poisoned caltrops (thinking shock-web type affect, but poison instead of lightning.)
Death’s Grasp: mine that detonates for a large amount of damage whenever a creature is resurrected nearby.

Spiritual
Huntress: summon black spirit huntresses that attack enemies. (I’m leery about the idea of a minion-assassin… but who knows?)
Lamia: summon dark spirits that inflict Amp Damage on their enemies. (Cool.)
Overlord: black spirit beast with wings and short ranged command aura. (The melee summon! Sweet.)

Suggested Skill(s):

Spiritual Seal: Area affect spell similar to slow missiles; Effect: No monsters can be resurrected and no minions can be summoned (Yes this means player minions!). (I like the idea of punishing monster resurrects some way other then tons of cold damage)

Dark Gathering: Aura that gives all minions/hirelings (not you) more maximum health and some elemental resistance. Possibly drains mana to keep on?

Crazed Imp: Throw-away minion, shoots fire bolts and suicide-explodes as a melee attack.

Vengeful
Crucify: curses surrounding foes to take a fixed amount of bonus damage. (Useful, I’ve never been one for Necro’s so I don’t use curses that much.)

Suggested Skill(s):

Weak Point: Two ideas for this one; Either a simple curse that lowers defense drastically (for a little amount of time) or a passive skill that increases attack rating. Not very flashy, but low attack rating can be a {filtered} to deal with. Perhaps the amount of attack rating could be based on something interesting, like weapon damage or type? More AR for ‘lighter’ and more precise weapons, like claws and daggers. Less for two-handed swords and the like.

If you hadn't guessed, I like playing Assassins. Keep up the good work Laz, I've had my eye on your work for a long time and you have continually impressed me, of course!

Oh and this is my second post on these forums, forgive me if I said/did something incredibly stupid :)

Hmm, the themed skilltab idea doesn't work well - people would end up ignoring the shared trees and using only the class-specific ones, or the other way round.

So how about these amazon combat trees? [as for the passive & magic & defensive & summoning & party buff & heal stuff, I'll have to do some testing first. ;) ]

Solar Arrow - enchants an arrow to stun its target and add a small amount of damage.
Divine Spear - enchants a thrown javelin to add damage and knock back its target.
Blindside - launch a javelin at the nearest foe regardless of direction, and add bonus damage.
Sunbeam - arrow that pierces through walls and enemies, inflicting damage in a line.
Pantheon - like Divine Spear, but does area effect knockback and damage when striking.
Solar Crown - enchant arrows to split up after a short distance into a lot of targeted arrows.
Guided Chain - javelin which chases after enemies and pierces to track and hit other enemies. [*]
Cherub Flight - launch a spirit which chases after and shoots arrows at your enemies.
Sundance - fire a lot of arrows in random directions around you to strike nearby enemies.
Phalanx - causes a lot of javelins to travel across the screen [top left to bottom right :) ].

[*] This is not guided arrow with piercing; the javelin can target multiple enemies in a row, and usually only hits the same enemy multiple times if there are no other monsters nearby.

Defend - melee spear attack that gives you a chance to dodge attacks while you're swinging.
Cherub Strike - hit surrounding enemies with multiple rapid attacks at greatly increased speed.
Eyes of Fire - melee spear attack that causes a fiery explosion which does area effect fire damage.
Deflect - melee spear attack that greatly increases resistance to damage while you're swinging.
Wings of Lightning - melee spear attack that causes a LF-type targeted lightning explosion.
Storm Strike - melee attack that releases tornadoes which do a percentage of your attack damage.
Heart of Ice - melee spear attack that adds massive cold damage and freezes an area.
Winged Strike - melee spear attack that causes circular area effect damage [hits nearby foes clockwise :) ].
Gotterdamerung - adds immolation fire, frost nova and a circle of charged bolts to melee spear attacks.
Solar Goddess - timered skill, temporarily turn invincible to everything for a few seconds.

Why? I mean did you ask them?

Well if you split the schools into builds (IE "javazon" "bowazon" etc.) then yes, this is probably true. That's because all the main skills a build needs are in the same set. But look at say the warcry tree. You can get lots of benefit from only a few points in different areas, or you can put lots of points in here and get even more benefits. But usually you will have to get your main killing skill from another tree.

If you make the shared trees into support things, like passives, auras, crowd control skills, curses, etc, and leave the specific trees for active attacks, then I think the idea can work. Each class is unique because they must combine their own specific attack abilities with common support skills.

Also, try to set up the shared trees across different-gendered characters, and players may pick one or the other class just based on that. :P

I would like to see more summon skills in Median 2.0, as we now can create new monsters. Perhaps having gems with 1 use of a summonskill not availabe in the skilltabs. For instance - sacrificing a ruby to create a fire companion (skill-level based on gem-level).

Other than that, I like the idea with shared skills. I think it will make add more planning to creating a character.
