Adding gems to sockets

Adding gems to sockets
What do I need to do to put regular gems in to sockets? Whenever I try to put a gem in to a socketed item, it won't let me.

I have not played this mod for a very long time. I do not remember having to need something special to add gems to an item that has sockets.
